This was a very economic wine at 750THB. It was nice and fruity but had short legs, too short to thoroughly enjoy the wine. It could use a little more depth for my liking and I would not go for it again, at least not this vintage. I’m not knocking the wine, this blog is just for my personal notes so I remember which wines I’d buy again or not. Salut!

Cassegrain Wines Merlot Cabernet Sauvignon Rouge 2006

We had this at the Bangkok Marriott Resort and Spa on the river. It’s a nice little joint with a pretty dock you can relax and get your drink on. This is a self-centered blog so I’ll just make my notes and that’s that;

The wine was very fruity with short legs. It was very light, bordering too light. I’d drink it again if I had no ‘stronger’ choices. Paid 1850 THB for it and it goes for only $9 AUD in Australia! I feel kind of ripped, but I’m getting used to it here in Thailand. The import duty/tourist factor must be through the roof. Anyhow we enjoyed the wine and we’d explore it again after we’ve search for something as fruity with a little more depth to it.

Errazuriz Max Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon 2005 – Chilean Wine

Since I’m primarily using this as a way to keep track of wine ‘I’d drink again’ and not to impress the wine loving public I’ll post this simple review on this wine we had for dinner.

We like it. It’s a full-on Cabernet, which possessed the expected not-as-fruity-as-we’d-want characteristics, but after a few sips, or glasses it grew on us and ended up fruitier and fruitier. Hopefully not so much as how an ugly girl becomes pretty after a few rounds!

Honestly, when I was sober (as I’m not now) I pounded this post into my brain (not too hard, I’m on vacation!) that I’d mention it’s not as fruity as we’d like, but more black fruit, darker fruit flavors. The tannins are just right and the wine is ready to be enjoyed NOW!

I’m becoming more and more of a fan of the wines being produced from Chile, albeit the wines I end up drinking tend to be on the lower end of the spectrum of heartily priced wines, but here in Thailand what’s normally a $17 bottle of wine in the US, is a $60 bottle of wine here.

Mondavi once stated something to the effect of, in Chile, he can produce top quality wine (of course reinforcing that he pays top dollar for the pickers, equipment etc to keep his famous edge, but then went on to say that another key component to his pricing is perception. He mentioned that if he sold the world class vintage for $20 like he could, nobody would buy it as they’d have already written it off as ‘too cheap to be worthy’. So I guess in my little corner of the world I find myself and unlikely victim of this (or just crazy import taxes!?) mindset. If I didn’t think it’d be worth it, I wouldn’t have bought it. I was happy and both my wife and I have agreed to add this to our list of Chilean cabs that we’d drink again.

Le Merle Aux Alouttes – Domaine Alain Chabanon – Vin De Pays d’Oc 2002

We had this Merlot mixed wine for dinner with our pasta, Australian beef tenderloin dinner. It presented a fruity flavor, with medium body and medium legs. This wine looks to have just come to maturation by the looks of the clear outer ring being ‘not so close’ to the glass upon inspection.

Alice loved this wine, so did I. It may lack a bit of character or depth, but it has enough to tantalize your senses and the fruity bouquet which follows through almost to the aftertaste is refreshing and just the way we like it.

We normally lean towards Merlots due to their fruitier and lighter nature, but often times find the complexity of such wines to be lacking, at least to my palate. This wine was light on tannins, I’ve read that 2001 was even better, but that will have to wait until another time.
